Peets Coffee

Another nice blend is their House Blend, it combines the lively, well-balanced flavors of Latin American coffees for a medium body and pleasant, satisfying taste.

House Blend is a perfect introduction to Peet's coffees. Also available in decaf.

Peets Coffee

Sumatra

Very full body, very concentrated flavor. Sweet, slightly earthy, herbal nuances with a gutsy richness. A favorite of Peet's customers for years. Also available in decaf.

Sumatra's coffees are grown almost exclusively by smallholders and processed by the semi-washed or wet-hulled method. The fruit is pulped on the farm, often by means of a hand-cranked mill, and the seeds, still encased in an endocarp, washed in a basket or bucket. They are laid on a mat for the briefest of dryings. Collectors purchase and hull the coffee at high internal moisture, removing the parchment, and exposing the beans. They subsequently dry in stages (and infuse with Sumatran character) all the way to the godowns in the port of Medan.

To me, this is one of the best coffee I have ever drank. And boy I drink alot of it!

Great Piece: It only takes one Awsh!t to erase a dozen Attaboys.

from: http://booksbikesboomsticks.blogspot.com/2012/08/it-only-takes-one-awsht-to-erase-dozen.html

Once having a rep for some of the sloppiest marksmanship in Christendom, the NYPD had spent brazillions of dollars on training for its officers and by all accounts, both publicized and anecdotal, it appeared to be paying off, with such notable successes as that one detective who batted 1.000 on the dude with a malf'ed TEC-9 (or whatever it was) in front of a crowded Times Square hotel lobby.

Getting a gun in Chicago quick and easy

BY FRANK MAIN Staff Reporter August 25, 2012 12:28AM

http://www.suntimes.com/news/crime/14618767-418/getting-a-gun-in-chicago-quick-and-easy.html#.UDoiSRqwLDU.twitter

Want to know how to get a gun?

Just ask Chris.

The skinny teen attends high school in Chicago and is a talented athlete. But he’s also a notorious gunslinger.

As a shooter in a South Side gang, he can get his hands on a gun as quick as you can get a burger at a fast-food restaurant.

“I will make a call and say I need a gun. I will ride down the street on my bike and get it — five minutes.”

The Chicago Sun-Times sat down with Chris for a lesson on how gangs get guns. Armed gangs like Chris’ have driven up Chicago’s murder total 28 percent above the tally at this time last year. And Chris is on the front lines of the shooting.

“For your ’hood, you can’t stop [getting] guns because it’s war season. A gang need any gun it can get,” said the teen, who has worked as an informant for police and asked for anonymity. The Sun-Times is identifying him by an alias.

‘Gun guys’

He knows men whose full-time job in the underground economy is to buy guns from suburban stores and illegally sell them to criminals.

Chris said he’s confident he and his crew will always be one step ahead of the police.

“You’ll never stop us from getting guns,” he said. “You feel me?”

Empire State Shooting: Shooter Never Shot At Police, Nine Bystanders All Shot By Police

from: http://www.infowars.com/empire-state-shooting-shooter-never-shot-at-police-nine-bystanders-all-shot-by-police/

The Guardian reports:

Johnson did not fire at police, according to law enforcement, but he did raise his gun. Nine civilians – four women and five men – were shot or grazed by the two officers who shot Johnson dead.

Initial reports suggested the shooter shot the bystanders, additionally it was suggested the cops had “returned fire,” which has also been proven wrong.

One of the shooting victims says police fired “randomly” into the street.

"Fast and Furious" Failure Fosters Favoritism for Finagling Fed

from: http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/articles/2012/fast-and-furious-failure-fosters-favoritism-for-finagling-fed.aspx

Fox News, the Washington Post, the L.A. Times, and The Hill are all over this one, as they should be. It seems that BATFE’s William McMahon, who, as the agency's Assistant Deputy Director for Field Operations approved its catastrophic and deadly “Fast and Furious” operation, is being allowed to receive his six-figure federal paycheck for nearly half a year, while working full-time as investment bank J. P. Morgan’s executive director for global security and investments in the Philippines.

As the Washington Post reports, "McMahon was one of five ATF officials recently singled out in a congressional report on the botched gun operation. The report alleged that McMahon knew that no safeguards were in place to prevent a large number of guns from getting into Mexico, but he made no effort to stop them." Fox News says "The [double-dipping, two-paycheck] arrangement allows McMahon to retire [from the BATFE] in December with a full government pension."

Congressional investigators into the "Fast and Furious" debacle, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Rep. Darrel Issa (R-Calif.), have asked the BATFE to explain McMahon’s situation, but the agency has said only that McMahon is a full-time employee in the agency, in its Office of Professional Responsibility, no less.

University Chancellor Nips Anti-Gun Professor's Delusions of Grandeur in the Bud

from: http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/articles/2012/university-chancellor-nips-anti-gun-professors-delusions-of-grandeur-in-the-bud.aspx

In a country of more 300 million people, it's almost guaranteed that, somewhere out there, there's going to be someone so full of himself that even hot air can't find a way inside.

Earlier this week, a reporter from the Boulder, Colorado, Daily Camera validated that theory in the course of covering a silly and pathetic story coming out of the University of Colorado—we're sure to its embarrassment.

Here in America, parents pay huge sums of money to get their kids educated, so that America will remain the most exceptional and productive country on Earth. Yet a physics professor at the university—we won’t give him the satisfaction of repeating his name, out of regard for Americans of better disposition who have the same name—had the gall to say that regardless of the laws of Colorado, which allow a person with a carry permit to carry firearms on campus, he would adopt a “personal policy” of cancelling an entire class if he discovered that any student in the class was carrying a gun.

As the Daily Camera relates it, “University of Colorado Chancellor Phil DiStefano notified the Boulder campus faculty Tuesday afternoon that professors ‘do not have the right to shut down a class or refuse to teach’ should they learn that one of their students is lawfully carrying a gun under a concealed‑carry permit. And, DiStefano added, any faculty members who do so will be in violation of their contracts and face disciplinary action.”

Respect for the Second Amendment in Illinois' Largest County

from: http://www.nraila.org/legal/articles/2012/respect-for-the-second-amendment-in-illinois-largest-county.aspx

On Tuesday, the Springfield, Illinois, State Journal-Register reported that the state's attorney in McLean County (Bloomington area) announced that he would not enforce certain Illinois gun control laws that violate the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In particular, the county's top prosecutor, Ronald Dozier, singled out the Illinois law that requires a person to possess a Firearm Owners Identification Card to be able to buy a gun.

"Our message is this," Dozier said. "We will no longer use the power and authority of our office to criminalize and punish decent, otherwise law-abiding citizens who choose to exercise the rights granted to them by the Second Amendment of the United States' Constitution to keep and bear arms in defense of themselves and their families.” Dozier also noted that Illinois is the only state that still prohibits people from carrying concealed weapons.

Prospective firearm carriers take note, however: McLean County Sheriff Mike Emery, while agreeing with Dozier about the conflict between the Second Amendment and the Illinois gun control laws, said his office would continue to enforce the laws in their present form. Thus, as Dozier said, his decision is largely "symbolic."

Are You Ready for the Next Disaster?

from: Cheaper Than Dirts!

We have all seen the footage of the victims of Hurricane Katrina running through the local stores and looting supplies, supplies like plasma televisions, laptops and all the beer they could carry. Obviously, I cannot recommend this course of action. Having supplies like food, water and medicine beforehand is without a doubt the best way to prepare for this scenario. A looter puts his or herself in a very dangerous situation. Local law enforcement may not be available to protect you in a widespread disaster and walking out of the local mega mart with armfuls of valuables could lead to other looters taking supplies from you forcefully.

If you do find yourself in need of supplies after the disaster has hit, and if you are lucky, you might still have some options. During a deployment to south Texas during hurricanes Dolly, Ike and Gustav, my National Guard unit was tasked with setting up several points of distribution sites or, PODs. In conjunction with the Red Cross, we were able to get much needed food, water, ice, and medicine to thousands of people from the local community who were in dire need.

It is better to be prepared. At a minimum, remember to have the following:

Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
Flashlight and extra batteries
First Aid Kit
Whistle to signal for help
Dust Mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
Local maps
Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger

Handing out supplies at a Point of Distribution
Remember if you have access to transportation, and local authorities are recommending an evacuation, I would strongly suggest that you do it. It is far better to have fewer people in an area that is affected by a natural disaster. Consider taking back roads however.

Try to be prepared.

Animals You Didn’t Know You Could Eat

from: Cheaper Than Dirts!

If you find yourself in a survival situation and food is running low, you may surprise yourself by the things your brain tells you what animals it wants you to eat. Most of us who live in major metropolitan areas get the vast majority of our meats from mega marts and grocery stores in our area. For such large stores, the choices in meats are comparably few. Your choices are pretty much between poultry, pork, beef, and seafood. However, if Western civilization collapsed and we ran out of mega mart meat, what kinds of animals are good to consume in a pinch? The answers might surprise you!

1.) Squirrels

2.) Raccoons

3.) Rats - not to sure I personally could do this!

4.) Dogs

5.) Horses

6.) Insects

Cartel Coordinator Says ‘Fast and Furious’ was about Supplying Guns

from: Cheaper Than Dirts!

TheBlaze.com is reporting that a high-ranking Mexican drug cartel operative currently in U.S. custody is making startling allegations that the failed federal gun-walking operation known as Fast and Furious wasn’t about tracking guns, it was about supplying them to Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa Cartel.

Jesus Vicente Zambada-Niebla, known as the Sinaloa Cartel’s logistics coordinator, describes “Fast and Furious” as elaborate agreement between the U.S. government and Mexico’s powerful Sinaloa Cartel to take down rival cartels. He was extradited to the Chicago last year to face federal drug charges.

In TheBlaze.com’s story, Zambada-Niebla claims that under a “divide and conquer” strategy, the U.S. helped finance and arm the Sinaloa Cartel through Operation Fast and Furious in exchange for information that allowed the DEA, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other federal agencies to take down rival drug cartels.

The Sinaloa Cartel was allegedly permitted to traffic massive amounts of drugs across the U.S. border from 2004 to 2009 — during both Fast and Furious and Bush-era gunrunning operations — as long as the intel kept coming.

Zambada-Niebla’s trial is scheduled to begin on Oct. 9.

A store owner in Roanoke says his first reaction was self defense.  He pulled a gun on a man trying to rob his store, Annwil Groceries, late Tuesday night.

Most customers don't know about the attempted robbery.  After they heard about it on Thursday, many were supportive of the owner's decision to defend himself with a gun against an armed robber.

"I think he did the right thing cause sometimes you don't get a second chance," says customer Victoria Jean-Pierre.

July sees 25.5% increase in firearms sales checks over same month last year; 26th straight month over month increase

from: http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/8487

The July 2012 NSSF-adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) figure of 853,355 is an increase of 25.5 percent over the NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 680,258 in July 2011. For comparison, the unadjusted July 2012 NICS figure of 1,289,585 reflects an 12.4 percent increase from the unadjusted NICS figure of 1,147,355 in July 2011.

This marks the 26th straight month that NSSF-adjusted NICS figures have increased when compared to the same period the previous year.

The adjusted NICS data were derived by subtracting out NICS purpose code permit checks used by several states such as Kentucky, Iowa and Michigan for CCW permit application checks as well as checks on active CCW permit databases.

Though not a direct correlation to firearms sales, the NSSF-adjusted NICS data provide a more accurate picture of current market conditions. In addition to other purposes, NICS is used to check transactions of firearms sales and transfers on new and used handguns and long guns.

Kasich and Romney school media: Gun bans don't work!

Are we sure about this?

from: http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/8489

Submitted by cbaus on Wed, 08/15/2012 - 07:00. Ohio Politics National Politics Guns in the News Gun Grabbers
by Chad D. Baus

Both Governor John Kasich and Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney are rejecting gun ban extremists' recent calls for new legislation in the wake of two multiple victim public shootings in "no-gun" zones.

Kasich is proving that his words spoken during the 2010 campaign, when he admitted he was "wrong" about his reasons for voting for the 1994 federal Clinton Gun Ban, weren't just election year rhetoric.

From The Toledo Blade, in an articled entitled "Gun-control issue flares anew":

After being asked by a reporter last week, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, said the federal assault weapons ban "was of very little use" and doesn't think the nation needs a debate on gun control.

"Look, the problem that we have is, let's get to the basics of the violence," he said. "It's issues that surround some things like mental illness. We don't know the full story with this guy [Colorado suspect]."

Mr. Kasich added: "You can go out and try to put all the bans on you want. If people are intent on doing something, they're going to do it and it begins to erode the ability of law-abiding people to be able to be part of the Second Amendment, so I don't think that is where this discussion is right now...I don't think we're now in any sort of a gun-control phase on this."

These are welcome words indeed, and they mirror the position of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Romney, who once supported an anti-gun law in Massachusetts similar to the federal one, told reporters this week that gun control laws are not the answer to the recent string of mass shootings. Like Kasich, Romney has come to believe it's not about the weapons used in the attacks, but about the individuals who choose to commit violence against others.

Cravaack wants more money to arm pilots

He calls them last line of defense as White House has sought cuts. ;laskdf poiwe. The White House questions value of the $25 million program. No pilot has purposely fired a shot in 10 years.

U.S. Rep. Chip Cravaack is challenging the Transportation Security Administration and the White House over potential cuts to a program that arms airline pilots as the last line of defense against hijackers.

As part of its Department of Homeland Security budget, the U.S. House this summer passed a Cravaack amendment that would increase funding for armed-pilot training by $10 million.

Anti-Gun Lawmakers Push Ammunition Sales Ban

from: http://www.nraila.org/legislation/federal-legislation/2012/anti-gun-lawmakers-push-ammunition-sales-ban.aspx

On Monday, July 30, U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.) and U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-N.Y.) introduced legislation that would impose sweeping new--and not so new--restrictions on ammunition sales.

The bills, S. 3458 and H.R. 6241, are known as the “Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act.”  The bill itself has four elements:

1. A federal licensing requirement for ammunition sellers;
2. Recordkeeping on all ammunition sales;
3. Reporting of all sales of more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition to anyone without a federal firearms     license within five consecutive business days; and
4. A photo identification requirement for all non-licensees buying ammunition, “effectively banning the online or mail order purchase of ammo by regular civilians.”

The two lawmakers’ contempt for “regular civilians” is nothing new, and neither are the first two of the requirements they propose. Starting in 1968, ammunition dealers had to have licenses from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and also had to keep records of purchasers. The recordkeeping requirement on .22 caliber rimfire ammunition was so burdensome that it was repealed in 1982. Congress did away with the remaining licensing and recordkeeping provisions as part of the "Firearms Owners’ Protection Act of 1986" after the BATF itself said the restrictions had “no substantial law enforcement value.”

Report: ATF gun part of plan to kill Juarez police chief Julián Leyzaola

from: http://www.elpasotimes.com/news/ci_21243298/report-atf-gun-part-plan-kill-police-chief?source=most_emailed

A weapon tied to "Operation Fast and Furious" was seized in Tijuana in connection with a drug cartel's conspiracy to kill the police chief of Tijuana, Baja California, who later became the Juárez police chief, according to a U.S. government report.

The firearm was found Feb. 25, 2010, during an arrest of a criminal cell associated with Teodoro "El Teo" García Simental and Raydel "El Muletas" López Uriarte, allies of the Sinaloa cartel.

Tijuana police said they arrested four suspects in March 2010 in connection with a failed attempt to take out Julián Leyzaola, and that the suspects allegedly confessed to conspiring to assassinate the police chief on orders from Tijuana cartel leaders.

The suspects had an arsenal of weapons and ammunition, and one of the firearms traced back to the operation that the Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms, Tobacco and Explosives (ATF) was monitoring from its field office in Phoenix.

If you have any doubt that the media tries to alter and steer the thinking and decisions of the public, just look at how they treat gun control issues and ignore the monumental achievements of the CFLs.

Federal Law Enforcement Agencies Buy Ammunition

from: http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/articles/2012/federal-law-enforcement-agencies-buy-ammunition.aspx

"You may recently have seen some in the Internet rumor mill feverishly repeating the obvious truth above, in an effort to stir up fear about recent acquisitions of ammunition by the Department of Homeland Security and a number of smaller agencies. The mildest writers have questioned why seemingly mundane agencies would need ammunition at all; more incendiary authors suggest that these government agencies are preparing for a war with the American people.

Much of the concern stems from a lack of understanding of the law enforcement functions carried about by officers in small federal agencies. These agents have the power to make arrests and execute warrants, just like their better-known counterparts at agencies like the FBI.

For instance, the Social Security Administration solicited offers for 174,000 rounds of pistol ammunition. But the agency has 295 special agents who combat Social Security fraud that costs tax payers billions each year, so the order works out to roughly 590 rounds of ammunition per agent for training, mandatory quarterly qualification shooting and duty use. More than a few NRA members would use that much ammunition in a weekend shooting class or plinking session."

Bloomberg has a chance to speak about gun control; but puts on a muzzle!

LOL!!!!

Bloomberg declined a chance to do it himself at the annual Gun Rights Policy Conference (GRPC) in September, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms noted.

According to CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, Bloomberg was invited to the 27th annual event, scheduled Sept. 28-30 in Orlando, Fla., but he turned it down.

“It seems odd for a guy like Michael Bloomberg, who rushes to every television news camera and microphone, to avoid what could be a major media event,” Mr. Alan Gottlieb mused.
