U.S. tries to calm Iraq’s anger over Ash Carter’s “will to fight” comment
Vice-President Joe Biden yesterday (Monday) called the Iraqi prime minister, Haider al-Abadi, to reassure him of continuing U.S. support, a day after bunt comments by U.S. defense secretary Ashton Carter. Carter told CNN on Saturday Iraqi forces had shown “no will to fight” ISIS and had fled in Ramadi despite outnumbering the Islamist militants by a wide margin. Abadi’s spokesman subsequently said that Carter had been given “incorrect information.  read more

Maj. Gen. Tim Cross, the most senior British officer to be involved in postwar planning in Iraq, pointedly said that although the Iraqi military outnumbered ISIS by a wide margin, this military lacks “moral cohesion” and effective leadership required to fight and defeat Islamic State forces. Cross's words echo comments made over the weekend by Ashton Carter, the U.S. defense secretary that, recent gains by ISIS fighters in Iraq were the result of the Iraqi army not having the “will to fight.” Military analysts say that the unexpected collapse of Iraqi forces in Ramadi, forces which included elite counterterrorism troops from Iraq’s Golden Division, indicate that the Iraqi forces may be weaker than many in the U.S. government had assumed.  read more

Saudi Arabia advertises for eight new executioners as beheading rate soars

from: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/may/18/saudi-arabia-advertises-eight-new-executioners-beheadings-soar

Saudi Arabia is advertising for eight new executioners, recruiting extra staff to carry out an increasing number of death sentences, usually done by public beheading.

No special qualifications are needed for the jobs whose main role is “executing a judgment of death” but also involve performing amputations on those convicted of lesser offences, the advert, posted on the civil service jobs portal, said.

A downloadable pdf application form for the executioner jobs, available on the website carrying Monday’s date, said the jobs were classified as “religious functionaries” and that they would be at the lower end of the civil service pay scale.

From Michael Bane:

No flying cars; no uploading my consciousness into a machine; no guaranteed fatless ice cream; no decent Guinness in a can; no wars fought with robot soldiers; no 15-hour work week; no Japanese sex 'bits that can not only coo your name but perform a passable tea ceremony.

Just the 13th Century, over and over and over again…

“Why” Behind The Creation Of The “Gun Violence” - The very concept of “object violence” is, of course, absurd on its face.

Understanding The “Why” Behind The Creation Of The “Gun Violence” Myth
Posted by Bob Owens on May 14, 2015 at 9:40 am

The headline out of Chicago this morning is sadly predictable.

“Mother loses 2nd son to gun violence in Roseland shooting; 1 other killed, 1 injured.”

While Baltimore captured media attention for the suspicious death of Freddy Gray, Gray’s peers continued doing what they do best.

“Away from protests, Baltimore gun violence continues”

The very concept of “object violence” is, of course, absurd on its face.

When someone is intentionally run over with a car, we do not attack the automobile industry for the vehicle’s misuse, nor do we attempt to then constrict the ability of other drivers to buy and drive that model of car.

When someone is intentionally beaten with a bat, we do not call out the manufacturer of that bat, nor the larger baseball industry, and insist that they are culpable for the misuse of that product.

Gun Grabbers High on Hillary, Look to Her to Enact Controls Where Obama Failed

7:00AM WEDNESDAY, MAY 06, 2015
Never mind all the rhetoric about how Hillary Clinton can’t get the Democrat Party’s presidential nomination because some fringe elements don’t think she’s radical enough. The Hill reports that “Advocates for gun control [an increasingly fringe group in their own right] have high hopes for Hillary Clinton’s presidential run,” seeing her as “an ally who can finish the push for tightened background checks that has stalled in President Barack Obama’s second term.”
Indeed, Clinton has been a vocal gun control supporter for more than 20 years.

Report: Gun grabbing sweeping the nation

by Chad D. Baus
7:00AM TUESDAY, MAY 05, 2015
According to a recent report on Fox News, and despite claims from anti-gun extremists including the current president of the United States assuring us that no one wants to take our guns away, cases of persons having their firearms confiscated are far from rare.

Cherished family heirlooms were among the 21 firearms Michael Roberts surrendered to the Torrance Police Department in 2010, after his doctor filed a restraining order against him.

"This kind of below-the-radar bureaucratic gun confiscation is a growing Second Amendment and property rights violation problem, particularly in strict gun control states like California, New Jersey and Massachusetts,” said Alan Gottlieb, founder of the Second Amendment Foundation. “People can't afford to spend tens of thousands of dollars on legal fees to get back a $500 firearm."

Gottleib tells Fox News that SAF is helping Bailey in his appeal of the judge’s order so he can not only reclaim his valuable firearms, but also some of his dignity as well.
The article goes on to discuss cases of gun confiscation in Louisiana, Massachusetts, Kentucky and Ohio:
